Palm Tree Blooms Every 100 Years: Then Dies
Madagascar is an unusual place. The fourth largest island in the world is home to some of the most bizarre flowers and trees. Over 90% of the plants found there, are found no where else on the planet. Recently a palm tree was discovered which blooms only once in 100 years. The blooming process takes so much energy from the life force of the tree, that is dies with-in months after blooming. This palm tree had been known by local villagers, for decades, however, none had ever witnesed a bloom, until the last year. There are fewer than 100 of these palms in existance. The tree which can grow to 66 feet in height, has leaves which are 16 feet long. The tree grows in one of the most remote parts of the island. According to Mijoro Rakotoarinivo, an employee of the London botanical gardens in Madagascar, the bloom starts with “a large shoot, a bit like an asparagus, grows out of the top of the tree and starts to spread. You get something that looks a bit like a Christmas tree growing out of the top of the palm” Then hundreds of tiny flowers appear dripping nectar, which in turn attracts insects and birds. The palm tree had been undiscovered until noticed by a Frenchman, who runs a cashew farm. He alerted scientists to the find. You may want to add this to your list of things to see before you die. It’s on my list.
